Welcome to Year 3
This term our topic is
Prehistoric People
This term, Year 3 will head back in time to the fascinating world of Prehistoric People, travelling through the Stone Age, Bronze Age, and Iron Age. The children will develop their understanding of chronology whilst investigating artefacts to explore how humans lived over 2000 years ago.
The children will develop their skills in drawing, using pencils and pastels, inspired by the ancient Lascaux cave paintings and create their own prehistoric-style artwork. They will learn about food seasonality and having researched iron age food, develop and create their own fruit breads.
In English, we will be inspired by stories including Iron Man by Ted Hughes and The Stolen Spear by Saviour Pirotta. The children will develop their writing skills by creating their own narratives, poetry, instructions and letters.
In maths, our focus will be on core number skills including place value, addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. We will also have daily Arithmagicans, which is our new maths platform to help all children learn their KIRFs (Key Instant Recall Facts.)
In science, the first half of the term will cover rocks, soils, and fossils, linking closely to how we learn about prehistoric life. After half term, we will explore forces and magnets, with lots of hands-on investigations and developing scientific thinking.
In RE, we will reflect on the significance of nature and the seasons in different religions and worldviews. We’ll explore what Christians learn from the Creation story and how this shapes their understanding of the world.
In PE in the first half of the term, the children will enjoy swimming lessons and outdoor adventurous activities. The focus will shift to dance and outdoor fitness.
In Year 3 the children start learning German. We will begin with A New Start, helping children learn basic greetings and classroom language, then move on to Calendar and Celebrations to introduce vocabulary related to days, months, and special events.
Our personal and social education themes will be Being Me In My World and Celebrating Difference, helping children understand themselves, their responsibilities, and how to appreciate diversity.
Our school values for the start of the year are thankfulness and responsibility - we are also really excited that we have become an International Cross of Nails School!
