What's Inside the Toy Box?

2022 Our year to shine!

Reception have had a great start to 2022, and what better way to begin the New Year by exploring our learning though the topic of toys! The Reception role play toy shop is a very popular area in the classroom. In the shop we use our phonics to write shopping lists, explore money to pay for the toys, take turns, share and communicate with the customers (we even get to play with our favourite toy!)

In reception, we love to use books to inspire our learning. With the days becoming colder we turned to the book ‘Betty and the Yeti’. We enjoyed creating our own Yeti and describing it, we designed and made a sled for Betty, made predictions about how fast it would travel, then tested it to see which sled was the fastest. We explored different materials by making hats for Betty to keep warm and had so much fun testing them whilst developing our vocabulary to describe them.

With so much excitement in reception already, we still have lots of learning opportunities to look forward to.

In our phonics we will be learning our set 2 sounds through daily RWI lessons, we will also be developing our blending and segmenting skills whilst learning new ‘red words’ and 'nonsense words' too!

In Mathematics, we will continue with our number recognition up to and beyond 10, representing numbers in different ways using a variety of resources. We will also be learning about and exploring capacity using porridge as we take on the role of Goldilocks and the three bears.

Our Values this half term are Hope and Collaboration. A fantastic opportunity for us to continue to work as a team and develop our friendships.
