Year 6

Welcome to

This Summer Term, Year 6 are focusing on the topic:

Inside Out

This topic will last for the whole of the Summer term. To begin, we will be focusing on the history of vaccines, including famous scientists who made medical breakthroughs in this area of Science, including Dr Edward Jenner, Dr Louis Pasteur and Alexander Flemming. We will also learn about what happens when a heart goes wrong, with a focus on organ transplants, again learning about some of the key people in this area of Science.

We will also learn about the human body as part our Science topic.

Our school values for this half term: Collaboration and Diversity. We will focus on this as part of whole school act of worship and also in class.

In maths, we will focus on shape, focusing on the following areas: calculating missing angles in triangles, quadrilaterals and circles, vertially opposite angles, angles on a line and angles around a point. We will also focus on position and direction including first and four quadrants, reflection and translation.

In English, we will focus on the texts 'Pig Heart Boy' by Malorie Blackman and Body Poetry – The Blood-Hungry Spleen by Allan Wolf. We will be using these texts as a basis for various styles of writing, including non-chronlogical reports, sonnets with the theme of the seasons of life, narratives based on creating atmosphere, incorporating character dialogue to support, short stories based on using dialogue to move the action on and an informal letter, based on the radical and controversial experiment involving the transplant of a pig's heart.

We will also complete some stand-alone learning regarding the King's Coronation and will link diary writing to this.

In RE during the first half term, we will be focusing on the key question: If God is everywhere, why go to a place of worship? In the second half of the Summer term we are focusing on How can following God bring freedom and justice?

As part of our learning in DT, we will focus on healthy eating and basic cooking skills.

In Art, we will draw in the style of Picasso (cubist interpretation of the human body) and other Impressionist artists.

Our computing topic this term is centred on researching and map work using Google Earth. We will also focus on spreadsheets and programming.

In PE, we will focus on volleyball and athletics during the first half of the term and then move onto gymnastics and rounders.
