To love, learn and grow together

Year 1

Welcome to Year 1

This term our topic is

Why does Father Christmas wear warm clothes?

This topic is all about the Polar Regions! The children will make comparisons between warm and cold climates. We will identify a range of both Arctic and Antarctic plants and animals and will learn about how these adapt to their environments by undertaking a blubber investigation.

We will explore a range of books to inspire our writing this half term, starting with ‘Lost and Found’ by Oliver Jeffers.

In Geography we will be learning about the seasonal weather patterns in the Arctic and how these compare to the UK.

In Art, we will be exploring Van Gough’s Starry Night painting and will use this style as inspiration to create our own take on the Aurora Borealis. In DT we will be creating our own Christmas decorations. We will use the skills cutting, sewing, designing, making and evaluating when creating our tree decorations.

In RE we will be thinking about Incarnation - 'Why does Christmas matter to Christians?’. We will also be gaining a deeper understanding about our values of Love and Preparation.
