To love, learn and grow together
To kick off our Spring Term, our first topic back is titled, ‘Why did the Elephants come to Leamington Spa?’ To give you a little background; the first elephant trainer in England was Samuel Lockhart, born to a circus family in Leamington in 1850. Sam bought three elephants from far off Ceylon and brought them back to Leamington to teach them some tricks. His circus was a grand building by the River Leam (where the Loft Theatre is now). As part of this topic, we will be learning all about the life of Samuel Lockhart as well as the life of the elephants he cared for- these were known as 'The Three Graces'. We will use the book, ‘Elephants in Royal Leamington Spa’ by Janet Storrie to develop the children’s understanding of the history of Leamington and how it has changed over time.
In Geography we will learn about our local area and compare this to Leamington Spa. We will also develop our map skills by locating landmarks in Leamington and will use symbols and a key to represent these on a map we have drawn ourselves.
In English, we will be using the book ‘Erica’s Elephant’ by Sylvia Bishop as inspiration for our writing, as well as Peter Spier’s ‘Circus’.
