Year 1

Welcome to Year 1

This half term our topic is

Seaside and Seas

Our topic throughout Autumn term is all about holidays! We will be exploring seaside holidays in the past (all the way back to the Victorian period) and comparing them with today, considering aspects such as transport, clothing and entertainment. We will explore a range of postcards from then and now and will also share some of our own experiences of holidays. Our writing will be inspired by a number of key texts, particularly ‘At the Beach’ and The Storm Whale’. Throughout the year we will have a series of writing tasks based on traditional tales. Our first traditional tale will be focusing on ‘The Enormous Turnip’.

In Geography we will be identifying the four countries of the UK and identifying coastlines. We will also compare our daily weather patterns with a non-European country.

In Science we will be exploring seasonal changes and identifying common plants and animals in coastal habitats, as well as under the sea.

In Art, we will be painting seascapes inspired by Van Gogh. In DT, we will be making boats out of recycled materials.

In maths we will focus on the following topic areas: place value, addition, subtraction, and shape.

In RE we will be thinking about 'Who is a Christian and what do they believe?’. We will also be gaining a deeper understanding about our values of Love and Respect. Our reflection area will demonstrate these values and how we incorporate these into our classroom.

In PE, we will focus on Fundamentals and Ball Skills during the first half of the term and then move onto Gymnastics and Target Games.
